The Power of Reflection in Coaching: How a Simple Word Can Unlock Insight

In a recent coaching session, I had an exchange with a client that highlighted the profound impact of reflection in the coaching process.

Coach: “Sounds like you're in a stalemate.”

Client: “I’m having an insight!”

At first glance, these two statements might not seem connected, but in this session, they were pivotal. After 45 minutes of my client working through a long-standing dilemma that had recently resurfaced, we had explored various questions and scenarios without arriving at a clear outcome.

When I reflected back to the client, saying, “Sounds like you are in a stalemate,” it was a breakthrough moment. The term “stalemate” resonated with them deeply, helping them recognize that they had reached the limit of what they could do in this situation. Instead of pushing further, the insight was that a pause and rest were needed, not more conflict or compromise.

This unexpected outcome was a powerful reminder of how clients’ insights often come from their own reflections, sometimes triggered by something as simple as a word or phrase from the coach. My role was to actively listen, reflect without judgment, and allow the client to lead the way.

This experience reinforced that the heart of coaching lies in supporting clients as they discover their own answers. By creating a space for them to explore and reflect, we help them achieve their goals and gain valuable insights.

How do you handle moments of stagnation or conflict in your own life? What strategies help you find clarity and move forward?
