Professional Coaching and The State of Becoming

The two art shows I visited this week had a theme for me: The state of becoming.

First up, we visited the Piet Mondrian Guggenheim New York — a tiny jewel of a show on the 4th floor that within a dozen or so paintings illustrated Piet's journey from representation to abstraction, his journey to go deeper within himself to find the universal. Guggenheim video about the exhibit.

And then last night, we attended a Wadham College Alumni event The Morgan Library & Museum, walking through the Franz Kafka with the four scholars who helped form the exhibit.

The biggest treat was unraveling more of the mysteries of Kafka with the scholars who study him, learning about the sides and shades of both the man, and the work.

At the end of the week, I'm reflecting about the complexities of all of us, as we are in a constant state of growth and change, of becoming, and thinking about legacy too, what do we leave behind.

This theme of becoming resonates with the principles of #ICFprofessionalcoaching. Coaches facilitate the client's journey of growth and transformation - creating space for authentic exploration. Like Mondrian's evolution from representation to abstraction, coaching clients peel away layers to reveal their essential selves. And just as scholarly dialogue (with lots of laughing and baudy jokes) illuminated Kafka's complexities, coaching conversations offer clients a reflective space to bring clarity to their multifaceted experiences.

Truly, the state of becoming stands at the heart of coaching - embracing continuous growth, navigating change with purpose, and empowering clients to consciously shape their own evolving legacy.
